Blu Ray Releases for 03/03/09 Previewed Briefly By Blue

* Australia (Fox) - Baz Luhrmann's epic about his home nation. I've heard this described as an amped up Gone With The Wind that frequently threatens to turn into an Australian gay cowboy musical. So if that's your thing, as the current poll suggests it is for two of you(six if you include the people who liked that gay robot cartoon more) then you should probably seek this out.

* Beverly Hills Chihuahua (Walt Disney) - Disney scientists somehow discovered, in their intense efforts to make annoying movies about fake-cute animals, how to somehow concentrate ten movies worth of awful into this one concept. It's truly stunning.

* Brokeback Mountain (Universal) - Good movie, but sad and long. Should have won Best Picture that year(it wasn't the best imo - Batman Begins was, but it was probably the best that could've won).

* I've Loved You So Long (Sony) - Supposed great Kristin Scott Thomas performance in this, sounds interesting.

* In the Electric Mist (Image) - Supposedly a mishmash misfire adaptation of a popular series of novels, I've heard mixed-to-good things about this and Tommy Lee Jones. Supposedly choped to bits for the US release though.

* NFL Super Bowl XLIII: Pittsburgh Steelers Champions (Warner) - God, in case you want to relive the torture a few more times.

* Paramore: The Final Riot! (Summit) - Music blu ray of a band I never heard of. Double fail.

* The Silence of the Lambs (MGM) - Probably the standout on this list. My current dvd serves me fine, this isn't really a rewatch even once a year film for me.

* Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic (Warner) - I actually have all this on my computer and iPod, for about half the price they're gouging for the blu ray. Good but they should have ponied up for a female voice actor for the Silk Spectres. The narrator is good at all the male voices however.

* Wonder Woman (2009) (Warner) - The latest direct to video animated DC universe film. This one is pretty good, but eh, Wonder Woman. DC has this big thing about their so-called "Trinity" which is made up of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Supposedly this is because they're the three most popular characters DC has, which actually isn't really true. The 3 most popular are: Batman, Superman, and The Joker. If it's heroes, it's Batman, Superman, and Robin. Wonder Woman has been a mid range seller at best for the past 30 years. But they persist on her presence in the Trinity, I guess because it makes it more PC. Or maybe she just sells more merchandise(not that there's a lot of Joker merchandise, hahahahahah)? Anyway, giving this a pass but may rent it in the future.

Blue's Top 5 of 2008

Bit late, but hey, the way they release these now you have to live in Los Angeles to see everything the year it's released. It was a pretty poor year in terms of volume of good movies, so I only made a top 5. #6 is actually quite good, Ché, but I believe in keeping to real numbers(six is a man not a number).

Without further ado:

5.) Speed Racer - Loved/Hated it when it was released, this film has grown on me a great deal. Just a lot of fun, and the editing technique adapted from the cartoon has been blowing my mind since I first saw it.

4.) In Bruges - My best hope for this was a not-too-horrible Guy Ritchie ripoff, instead it turned out to be a flat-out brilliant movie not at all derivative.

3.) Doomsday - If you're a John Carpenter fan, this is the culmination of 20 years of anticipation of Carpenter one day reachieving the heights of his Escape From New York.

2.) The Wrestler - I'm so very glad Darren Aronofsky chose to do this instead of that stupid Noah's Ark movie he was talking up. A return to form after the lackluster The Fountain. Mickey Rourke in a defining role.

1.) The Dark Knight - I expected this to be good based on Batman Begins, to my shock and surprise it was so much more. This film articulated the themes of the comic to a greater extent than the comics ever have. A masterpiece.

Blu Ray Releases for 02/24/09 Previewed Briefly By Blue

* Akira (Honneamise) - The Citizen Kane of anime, this was transferred to a digital source in a restoration a few years ago so it should look pretty spectacular. I'm a bit over anime but this one is a must buy. A release like this by itself would make the worthwhile, but wait, we're not done yet!

* The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (Blue Underground) - Dario Argento's first giallo is also one of his best, and probably the best entry point into his filmography. Can't wait to see Blue Underground's transfer of this. Now bring on Deep Red and Tenebre!

* The French Connection II (Fox) - Unfairly criticized sequel to the wildly popular first film. It's just different, really, and people wanted more of the same. John Frankenheimer, one of my favorites, directed this. Personally I thought this was a better movie than the original, but I doubt many will agree with me.

* The French Connection (Fox) - William Friedkin's classic. Like I said above, the sequel imo is a better movie but this is easily the more entertaining one. The transfer for this one has been heavily heavily mucked about with by Friedkin, much to the dismay of many online. Basically he desaturated the colors(the real explanation is much more complicated and cool sounding, but these previews are meant to be brief, dammit) and people are saying they look too pastel-like. I guess we'll see. If this were the only release this week I'd get it, but with so many pricey discs showing up that I want, I'll put this off for another time.

* Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder (Fox) - The final of four Futurama dtv movies. A shame, the series has really grown on me from my initial dismissal of it as a tepid Simpsons spinoff. Now it's probably my favorite animated tv show of all time.

* Hurricane on the Bayou (Image) - IMAX documentary about Hurricane Katrina narrated by Meryl Streep. People(crazy people) say that the Republicans were behind the Katrina disaster to disenfranchise black people in Louisiana. You'd think though that if the Republicans really had weather controlling powers, they'd pull those out right about now.

* Kill Switch (Momentum) - Steven Seagal movie of some kind.

* The Matador (2008) (City Lights) - Not the Pierce Brosnan movie, but about an actual Matador. Never heard of it.

* Neil Young: Archives Volume One - (1963-!972) (Warner Music Group) - Eh, Neil Young. I mean, I like that one song of his, Heart of Gold, but really when he had his big comeback with Pearl Jam I really seriously did not get it. I still don't. He's not a good guitarist, he's not a terribly great songwriter("keep on rockin in the free world" wtf??!!) and he wasn't that big a deal back in the 60s/70s, was he? Eh. Eh! Whatever.

* Ronin (MGM) - LOVE this movie. The third Must-Buy for me on this list, and I'll buy this one over the others if I have to choose. Probably DeNiro's last good movie, and John Frankenheimer's last great one. Just all-around perfect thriller.

* Vanishing Point (Fox) - Classic 70s car-chase movie referenced in Tarantino's Death Proof.

* What Just Happened (Magnolia) - Another casualty of the "movies about Hollywood tend to suck" curse.

* The Who: Live At The Isle Of Wight Festival 1970 (Eagle Rock) - Eh. Music blu ray, pass.

Awesometown!

Blu Rays for 02/17/09 Previewed Briefly By Blue

* Body of Lies (Warner) - Ridley Scott directs a Tony Scott movie. That's usually fairly bad news, as when he did GI Jane. Russell Crowe is interesting, as is DiCaprio, but this looks generic as hell.

* Capote (2005) / In Cold Blood (Two-Pack) (Sony) - One is a good movie, the other is an outright classic. Dunno if you can get In Cold Blood separately, but it should look pretty spectacular on blu ray. Rightly considered one of the best achievements in cinematography.

* Changeling (2008) (Universal) - Starring Angelina Jolie and her funny hat. Melodrama from Clint Eastwood, it sounds like he's on autopilot on this one. Pre 1950 Hollywood is hard to dramatize well, only really Chinatown and LA Confidential did it well.

* Gandhi (Sony) - This Gandhi guy, I don't get it. So what if he starved himself to make political points. YAWN! Just kidding. Ben Kingsley's signature role. If only they'd shot Weird Al's planned sequel.

* High School Musical 1-3 (Box Set) (Walt Disney) - The perfect gift for anyone you hate in your life.

* High School Musical 3 (Walt Disney) - Go away.

* High School Musical: Remix (Walt Disney) - Die.

* How to Lose Friends & Alienate People (MGM) - This movie is probably about someone buying and giving away copies of the High School Musical box set.

* Kramer vs. Kramer (Sony) - Dustin Hoffman vs Meryl Streep in a knockdown, drag-out, battle for the ages! Nah just kidding they just play a married couple that get a divorce. One of those "real life" dramas that BORE THE LIVING FUCK OUT OF ME. Though in fairness I haven't seen this since I was like 5.

* The Midnight Meat Train (Lionsgate) - No, not gay porn. This is an adaptation of one Cliver Barker's Books of Blood short stories. It's fairly faithful, with some story padding to make it feature length. Kind of generic all in all. I was lucky to see it in the theater because Lionsgate buried it's release. Rental, at the most.

* One Long Night (Vivendi Visual) - Dunno what this, not interested in looking it up.

* The Passion of the Christ (Definitive Edition) (Fox) - Catholics and Christians in general annoy the hell out of me, and this movie is a good example why. See, Scorsese made a BRILLIANT movie about Jesus on the cross 20 years ago called The Last Temptation of Christ. In that movie, Jesus has doubts about whether he is the son of God, which apparantly is the worst thing ever to Christians. So in right wing The Passion of the Christ, Jesus goes through lots of horrific punishment and torture stoically, content in his sure knowledge that he's the son of God and that he's sacrificing for the sake of humanity. But the thing is, if you know 100% positively you're the son of God and you're going to heaven for sure, etc, where is the sacrifice in that? I far prefer Scorsese's version, where Jesus is not sure and sacrifices himself anyway. Because that actually IS a sacrifice, it actually requires him giving something up.

* Quarantine (Sony) - American remake of [Rec] which is sadly unreleased here still. It would've been nice to see that as a supplement on this blu ray, but no go. Rental.

Blu Rays For 02/10/09 Previewed Briefly By Blue

* Amadeus: Director's Cut (Warner) - One of the best movies ever made. This blu ray comes with a cd with tracks of Mozart's music from the film, as well as a digital copy(for ipods). Recommended highly.

* Boondock Saints (Fox) - When I tell fans of this movie that I saw it theatrically, their initial reaction is disbelief or envy. See, it was only released in 3 theaters in Los Angeles for a week. One of those theaters happened to be across the street from my college, and just a block away from where I lived at the time. I explain this, and they're impressed. Until I tell them I walked out. This movie is flat out shit. Far be it from me to generalize, but the people who make up the cult of this film should be immediately suspect of being complete fucking idiots. Seriously, the only relative appeal of this movie is to put the far better documentary about the making of it, Overnight, into context. When I say bad, to put this into context, it's Sean Patrick Flannery's worst movie. And the fucker was Powder.

* Chocolate (Magnolia) - From the director of Ong Bak. Remember him? Yeah so do I, vaguely. Never heard of this movie.

* Donnie Darko (Fox) - Not much info about the release in the 30 seconds I took to look. However it doesn't say Director's Cut anywhere so I'm thinking this is a good buy. See, normally Director's Cuts improve the movie. However Richard Kelly, the director of Donnie Darko, is a giant douche tool idiot(see Southland Tales). I once heard him explain the untold portions of the movie and THEY RUIN THE MOVIE. Like make a good thing bad. I saw the theatrical cut when it played briefly in LA, and this remains by far the preferable edition imo. Kelly has some talent but needs to be told no for his movies to work.

* Doom (Universal) - Say what you will, I enjoyed this movie. Is it amazing? No. But the game, while ground breaking, isn't really *that* good. The Rock's movies tend to be underrated but he's good in this and this is a pleasant time waster.

* Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13 / Bojack Returns (FUNimation) - Never got into Dragon Ball Z. Frankly it always came off as a strange mix of Fist of the North Star and Pokemon. I will probably be murdered for that comment. Oh well, bring it fuckers.

* Frozen River (Sony) - Melissa Leo(from the show Homicide) was nominated for an Oscar for this movie. No doubt it's good, but the fact that Melissa Leo, while a good actress, stars in this suggests it's dreary, extremely low budget, and very indie. Which isn't a list of bad things necessarily, but who wants to own a movie like that on blu ray.

* A History of Violence (Warner) - The first movie by Cronenberg in his new film noir kind of mentality. Excellent little movie, with a great cast.

* IMAX: Grand Canyon Adventure - River at Risk (Image) - Yawn.

* IMAX: Super Speedway (Image) - Hmm this might be interesting. As long as it's not NASCAR.

* Miracle at St. Anna (Walt Disney) - Spike Lee movie about how black people actually fought in World War 2 as well. Basically by just swapping out a normal WW2 plot with black actors instead of white. Apparantly not very good either(the trailer was pretty pretentious).

* My Name is Bruce (Image) - Bruce Campbell capitalizing on his fame in non-Evil Dead 4 way. So who cares.

* Nights in Rodanthe (Warner) - Chick flick. Who cares.

* The Pelican Brief (Warner) - There's only one really good Grisham movie, and that's The Rainmaker. The Firm is okay as a thriller but Coppola's Rainmaker is really underrated. This movie sucks, and not just because of Julia Roberts. Though mainly.

* Pretty Woman (Walt Disney) - Is it Julia Roberts week? People criticize this movie for making it seem that becoming a prostitute is a glamorous thing to do. But hell, have you SEEN how hot porn stars have gotten? Girls are doing porn these days that would never have touched it before. I credit this movie.

* Raging Bull (MGM) - Hmm. I actually am not a fan of this movie. I know I should be, it's supposedly Scorsese and DeNiro's respective masterpieces, but not really feeling it. Never have. Respect it, just don't love it. BTW although I had Taxi Driver listed last week it did not come out, seems like it was a false scheduling thing.

* The Rundown (Universal) - Another movie with The Rock, and this is actually a pretty fun action movie in my opinion.

* Soul Men (2008) (Weinstein) - This movie is cursed! At least it's a convenient excuse not to watch it.

* Street Fighter (Universal) - Gloriously bad or gloriously awesome? I'm really tempted to buy this just because. The weird thing is the casting is actually decent, considering.

* A Time to Kill (Warner) - Another Grisham. I guess his new book is out this week? Sounds about right. This one's okay, but again, no Rainmaker.

* W. (Lionsgate) - I really enjoyed this, it's a seriocomic take on Bush's life and what made him want to be President, despite being completely mentally unqualified.

* The Way of War (First Look) - Cuba Gooding Jr movie I never heard of, that is direct to video. Whatever.

* When Weather Changed History (Madacy) - Weather documentary. I didn't realize there was another way of saying "boring." But here you go.

Blu Ray Releases For 2/03/09 Previewed Briefly By Blue

* Being There (Warner) - Drama with Peter Sellars that I've never seen, but have heard is a classic. Should look good, being a Warners disc.

* Clerks II (Weinstein) - This movie was very entertaining in the the theater but lacks much rewatchability now. Mainly because the guy playing Dante is so hideously ugly and unfunny. Rosario Dawson is hot as hell though. Randall and the weird Christian kid are the funniest things in this.

* The Cure: Trilogy - Live In Berlin (Eagle Rock) - The Cure. Don't they write Burger King jingles now?

* Friday the 13th (1980) (Paramount) - Oh man, major release for me. Cannot wait. I don't doubt that blu ray barely enhances the quality of this movie, but the previous dvds I have are all non-16x9 enhanced and I didn't rebuy them for like 7 years because I've been waiting for the next format. And this is it. Actually not my favorite in the series, but it's one of the not-horrible ones(I say that with love). uncut for the first time, too!

* Jeff Dunham: Arguing with Myself (Image) - And strangely, he keeps losing.

* k.d. lang: Live in London (Image) - Pass.

* Little Miss Sunshine (Fox) - Strangely, this movie is "good enough to be nominated for best picture" but The Dark Knight is not. Pfft.

* Napoleon Dynamite (Fox) - What, is it cute/obnoxious indie comedy week from Fox? Didn't they already release Juno?

* Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (Sony) - Actually really liked this movie.

* Office Space (Fox) - Modern classic.

* Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway (Sony) - Here's a hint for how to tell if a rock musical sucks: none of the "rock" songs actually sound like rock and roll.

* Secret Life of Bees (Fox) - This is about spelling bees, right? I may have been misled.

* Sex Drive (Summit) - Teen sex comedy from a minor distributor. Is that a recipe for suck or success?

* Sideways (Fox) - Quirky indie comedy from Fox, you say? Pshaw! This one's good though.

* Space Buddies (Walt Disney) - The fuck?

* Taxi Driver (Sony) - Oh damn! My favorite Scorsese movie. My favorite DeNiro movie. Might wait on the blu ray though, until I feel like seeing it again.

* Zack and Miri Make a Porno (Weinstein) - Kevin Smith comedy I couldn't be bothered seeing. Starring a cast that has literally been in every other movie released this year. How's he do it?

Blu Ray Releases for 1/27/09 Previewed Briefly By Blue

* Any Given Sunday - Director's Cut (Warner) - Unfairly criticized Oliver Stone film. Not among his best, but a decent movie. Don't know about you, but I am sick to death of heart-warming/motivational football movies. They all have the same plot. This one is cynical, and perhaps too on-the-nose, because at times it's a little obvious.

* The Bourne Trilogy (Universal) - Don't get me wrong, I like these movies a lot, but goddamn they manage to stretch the plot out. There's enough plot in all three of these for one regular movie. Still, really well done thrillers.

* Dead & Buried (Blue Underground) - Terrific horror movie from the early 80s. I have a perfectly good dvd of this already though, and frankly this movie wouldn't really benefit too much from blu ray resolution.

* Death Trance (Tokyo Shock) - Fantasy samurai movie from the director of Versus starring Steven Seagal's son. It's about the apocalypse. Sounds about right.

* Groundhog Day (Sony) - I'd say this was Bill Murray's best movie but really there's a few that are all pretty amazing. This is a real contender. Though again this doesn't really call out for HD.

* Hulk Vs. (Lionsgate) - Two short animated films I guess? With Hulk fighting Thor and Hulk fighting Wolverine. Yawn.

* Lakeview Terrace (Sony) - The latest installment of the "Samuel L Jackson yelling at people" series. This time he's an evil cop!

* Open Season 2 (Sony) - Is this an animated film? I forget.

* The Pink Panther (1963) (Fox) - Oh, nice, the original. Dunno how this looks in blu ray but it should be nice. The Closeau-centric sequels are better though, imo.

* Pride & Glory (Warner) - I don't get why people hate Colin Ferrell. I mean, he was maybe in too many movies at once, but he's routinely good in all his roles. Even in Alexander, which was a poor movie(not as poor as people say at that) he was pretty solid. And I flat out love his work in Miami Vice and In Bruges. Anyway people assumed this particular movie sucks because he's in it, despite the presence of Ed Norton as well. Well hell! It got good reviews and is probably worth a watch on dvd at least.

* The Rocker (Fox) - I heard this comedy with Rainn Wilson from the Office is actually pretty good, if not actually rip roaringly hilarious. Sounds like a wait for cable deal though.

* RockNRolla (Warner) - Oh man. I loved this movie in the theater, and this is my must-buy of the week. Guy Ritchie's return to form, and for my money I actually like this better than Snatch and Lock,Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The best soundtrack in years to boot. Fun fun fun movie and every performance is good.

* Stomp Live (Well Go USA) - Fuck Stomp. Them and the Blue Man Group. They exist on the same plane of retard-pleasing performance art that Carrot Top does, but since he talks he's labeled a stand up and held to a higher standard. Well guess what. Performance art sucks. Yeah, sorry. It's the bottom layer of bad art as far as I'm concerned, along with soft jazz, baby photography and modern country music. What does that mean exactly? Well, just this: even the people who are considered to be really good at it, are fucking terrible. It's non-art.

* Vicky Cristina Barcelona (Weinstein) - Woody Allen's 12th Return To Form in a row! Amazing how that works out. I'm serious. I've heard every movie of his since Deconstructing Harry has been a return to form. Such bullshit. Why can't critics just admit he's good but unpopular? I haven't seen a movie he's made in the past ten years that I'd consider bad. Anyway, this movie has the midget Scarlett Johanssen, Rat Face Penelope Cruz, and an actually attractive-from-every-angle actress in Rebecca Hall. Also Javier Bardem in a non-murder role that would've gone to Antonio Banderas five years ago.

* Zodiac: Director's Cut (Paramount) - This movie grew on me like no other in recent memory. I've probably seen it 15 times by now and it's better each time.

Blu Ray Releases for 1/20/09 Previewed Briefly By Blue

* 13 Going on 30 (Sony) - Jennifer Garner does the Big thing. Less pedestrian than most romantic comedies, and somehow she manages not to look like a horse the entire movie! Quite an achievement!

* Amusement (Warner) - A horror movie shelved for a long while by Warner Bros, ala Trick'r'Treat. Is this one any good? Well, it's new horror, so I'm guessing no. But it was shelved by a greedy corporation so we should all pretend it is. Yeah! No kind of deception like self deception!

* Antwone Fisher (Fox) - Denzel Washington's directorial debut. Never saw it, don't care to.

* The Deal (2008) (Peace Arch) - A movie from last year starring Meg Ryan and William H. Macy that I never heard of. Is it any good? Well, it's about the behind the scenes antics of a movie production. So no, no it is not. Movies in that genre have a lower success rate than even horror movies.

* Domino (Warner) - I sort of liked this, sort of disliked it. I thought Keira Knightley was good(and hot) in it, but the plot is bizarre. Considering it's based on a true story I'd like to have seen it hew more closely to reality without the lame caper storyline.

* El Norte (Criterion Collection) - Some movie I've heard of but know nothing about. Plot sounds depressing though.

* Election (Paramount Entetainment) - Part 3 of Matthew Broderick's trilogy of awesomeness(including Wargames and Ferris Bueller's Day Off)

* The Express (Universal) - ANOTHER football movie. Yawn.

* Henry Poole is Here (Anchor Bay) - Years-later sequel to a movie I never saw.

* Igor (MGM) - Animated film about Frankenstein's assistant. Probably looks great. Not Pixar or Disney or Dreamworks so I know nothing about it, having not been beaten over the head about it like I am with their films.

* King Kong (2005) (Universal Entertainment) - A fascinating movie about a cabin boy named Jimmy and his education by the black first mate of the ship he's on. Their relationship is touching, as the first mate gives him life advice such as "Jimmy, you gotta get yourself an education! Gotta get yourself off this boat, Jimmy!". Unfortunately the movie is ruined an hour into it when some giant monkey shows up and takes over the movie for the next two hours. We sadly never see the Jimmy/first mate relationship resolved! I say sequel. Leave the monkey out this time.

* Max Payne (Fox) - A fellow I know who was a big fan of the Hitman movie HATED this. Said it was the worst movie he'd ever seen. I repeat again, someone who LIKED Hitman said THIS was shit. What does that tell you?

* The Notebook (Limited Edition Giftset) (Warner) - Boring chick romance movie gets a money wasting special edition.

* The Pink Panther (2006) (Sony) - Steve Martin remake of the original. Steve Martin can somehow make bad comedies ala Eddie Murphy without it staining his reputation. An impressive feat.

* Poison Ivy 4: The Secret Society (Warner) - The previous three movies had copious amounts of nudity, so hopefully this one does as well. But really, this will be on cable soon enough.

* Repo! The Genetic Opera (Lionsgate) - A horror rock opera starring Giles from Buffy with an extended cameo by Paris Hilton, from the director of Saw III and Saw IV. Yet I will watch this. Oh yes, I will. Do I hate myself? Most likely.

* Saw V (Lionsgate) - Speaking of Saw, this one wasn't so bad. Unfortunately unless you've seen the previous four(and who but me would) it won't make any sense. I'm a little stunned such a continuity-heavy horror series is continually successful. Never count out movies that give teenage boys a chance to feel up their scared girlfriends, I guess.

* Unfaithful (Fox) - Richard Gere, Diane Lane. Sex drama. I was like thirty years too young to see this when it came out. Diane Lane is hot, though.

Kakow! Blu Ray Releases For 01/13/09 Previewed Booshly By Blue

* Appaloosa (Warner) - Um, I guess this was pushed from last week? Same comments from then apply now.

* Climbing Your Way Down The Corporate Ladder (Victory Multimedia) - Some low budget comedy starring Paulie from the Sopranos. IE probably terrible. Also Amazon's order page has this listed as cancelled. Soooo wtf.

* Drumline (Fox) - Nick Cannon's starmaking appearance. Jesus Christ this release week SUCKS.

* Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (Bandai Visual) - Dunno how this will look. The Appleseed cg movie apparantly was just mastered from a film print instead of the digital source so looked relatively crappy. I guess if you're interested read a review? What? You think these are reviews? You think I've seen any of these blu rays? They haven't been released yet! Hence the word preview. However since maybe 3 people read these they probably weren't expecting these to be reviews. Hmmm.

* Lakeview Terrace (Sony) - Part 23 of the "Samuel L Jackson Yells at People" epic. This time he's playing a cop.

* Mirrors (Fox) - Hey something I actually have seen, and actually liked! Kiefer Sutherland plays the most hardcore night watchman ever, in a movie by Alejandro Aja. Not a great horror movie but at least watchable. Doubtful I'll buy this.

* My Best Friend's Girl (Lionsgate) - Dane Cook needs to be raped in prison several thousand times. That's unrelated to this movie though, but if you know anything about it, then you probably thought it was due to his involvement in this movie, which just proves how bad it is. He deserves it just for the constant playing of commercials for this last summer.

* Stargate: The Ark of Truth (MGM) - Sigh. It is SAD AS HELL that this is the third best movie on this list(I assume, I only actually saw one of them).

* Swing Vote (Walt Disney) - Kevin Costner pretending people still find him charming.

* Without a Paddle: Nature's Calling (Paramount) - A dtv sequel to a movie no one but the stupidest people alive enjoyed.

Blu Ray Releases For 01/06/09 Previewed Briefly By Blue

* ABBA: The Movie (Universal Music) - Finally something for FNORD. A documentary by Lasse Hallstrom(later the director of Chocolat) from 1977 about ABBA's first world tour. Pass.

* The Absolute Best of Ghost Hunters (Image) - Surprisingly longer than a minute.

* An American Carol (Vivendi Visual) - Conservatives prove once again they don't have a sense of humor or any human decency, as the filmmakers exploit famously non-partisan historical figures such as George Washington, and the tragic death of non-"Real Americans" on 9/11 to press their dubious claim of being correct about everything ever, and that it's just simple-minded short sightedness that makes anyone believe anything else.

* Appaloosa (Warner) - This movie is odd. On one hand so much of what I heard about it sounds dull, on the other tons of people are in love with its old-fashioned take on Westerns. Rental.

* Babylon A.D. (Fox) - I saw this in the theater because I was bored as hell, and this didn't help. Generic plot, generic set design, generic actors. Frankly the story didn't even make much sense.

* Bangkok Dangerous (Lionsgate) - Nicholas Cage in a bad Asian film. Really this wouldn't be as reviled if it actually starred an Asian actor, but then again that asian actor wouldn't have been paid as much.

* Caligula (Image) - The capper to Malcolm McDowell's Trilogy of Twats, ending the cycle begun with If... and continued in A Clockwork Orange, this movie is seriously underrated, though still not especially good. But it's far from the worst movie of all time. More odd than anything else, like a Pasolini movie with English actors.

* Dexter: The Complete First Season (Paramount) - Heard the show is great, I've been waiting for this to hit blu ray. Preordered it.

* Disaster Movie (Lionsgate) - These Parody Movies are an unholy abomination of Hollywood and need to be stopped.

* Eden Lake (Weinstein) - Blu says it probably sucks(actually he said he didn't know, but I'm guessing he'll think it sucks, which it almost certainly does, being a new horror movie and all).

* Friday Night Lights (Universal) - Yet another football movie, this one seems to have struck a bigger chord than most, resulting in Peter Berg having a successful directing career suddenly, and a tv show. The tv show has hot chicks in it, and stars the guy playing Gambit in Wolverine. That's all I got.

* The Last Emperor (Criterion Collection) - A better title would be the The Last Emperor...SO FAR!!! Because really China can't keep up this Communism thing forever.

* The Man Who Fell to Earth (Criterion Collection) - One of David Bowie's best movies, and that's actually saying something! Also you see Rip Torn's penis! And Bowie's(it looks odd)! Probably too arty for most sci fi fans, but I enjoyed the film.

* National Geographic: Atmospheres - Earth, Air & Water (National Geographic) - Yawn.

* Pineapple Express (Sony) - A stoner action comedy that isn't particulary funny or exciting. Decent flick though. Just not as good as promised by the awesome trailers.

* Ping Pong Playa (Image) - Never heard of it.

* Righteous Kill (Anchor Bay) - Pacino is an oddball, and DeNiro is lazy. I'm talking about the last ten years of their careers so far, not this movie, which I skipped. The premise of this seems pretty weak. These guys, in their mid-sixties, are supposed to be cops? And partners? Do they let people stay on the police force for over forty years? And be partners with someone equally as old? Pass.

* Superhero Movie (Weinstein) - ANOTHER Parody Movie. It WOULD get a pass because it has Leslie Nielsen in it, but then again he was in that horrible science fiction one years ago. No pass for you! Lame.

* The Wackness (Sony) - AKA the art of being FNORD(it's pronounced fuh-nor-d, Wildcat, not Eff-Nord). Actually this sounds like a lame indie movie. Yawn.
