Bagman, The Movie

Blu Ray Releases for 12/16 Previewed Briefly by Blue

* Bottle Rocket (Criterion Collection) - Wes Anderson's first film, and one of Criterion's first releases on blu ray. Good movie, but I'm not a big enough fan to buy it on blu ray. Waiting on Rushmore and the Royal Tenenbaums, where the higher production values may shine through a bit more.

* The Cheetah Girls: One World (Walt Disney) - Raven-Symone is fat, ugly, and untalented. There. I said it. Someone finally said it so we can all go back to reality and stop pretending that there's an actual reason this chick is successful at anything.

* Chungking Express (Criterion Collection) - Kar-Wai Wong's masterpiece, though boring as hell. Beautiful though.

* Coach Carter (Paramount) - The tensest performance in Samuel L Jackson's career as he tries his best to not constantly scream profanity, in order to maintain a PG-13 rating.

* Death Proof (Weinstein) - Supposedly you can choose between scratchy and clean versions of the movies on this disc and Planet Terror's, might be worth it for that alone. I wish it had the other trailers though.

* The Heartbreak Kid (2007) (Paramount) - Ben Stiller and the Farrelly Bros, years after There's Something About Mary, and both off their game to alarming degrees. Still, you can apparantly see Malin Akerman topless in this(she's in the Watchmen movie as Silk Spectre II).

* Hot Rod (Paramount) - Adam Samberg's attempt at movie stardom hits the SNL curse. Oh well.

* In the Name Of The King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (Fox) - Uwe Boll's answer to Lord of the Rings, starring Jason Statham and Burt Reynolds. Yep. ...

* Into the Wild (Paramount) - Sean Penn's mostly-already-forgotten movie starring Speed Racer as a dumb kid who starves to death in Alaska.

* Mamma Mia! The Movie (Universal) - My sister loved it, which is evidence enough for me that it's abysmal(for proof, her favorite movies are: Man From Snowy River, Man From Snowy River 2, Gone With The Wind, Sex and the City: The Movie)

* The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (Universal) - Notable for NOT being considered Brendan Frasier's worst movie of the year, but only because he made two.

* Old School (Paramount) - Will Ferrell goodness. Last good Vince Vaughn role.

* Planet Terror (Weinstein) - Fun movie, probably(and ironically) Robert Rodriguez's best movie.

* The Third Man (1949) (The Criterion Collection) - All time classic, might wait till later for the blu ray though, since I don't watch it frequently enough.

* Traitor (Anchor Bay) - A very small theatrical release over the summer, I actually managed to catch it. Traitor's a very solid, low key political thriller, with some very good performances. More of a rental though.

Blu Ray Releases for 12/09 Previewed Briefly by Blue

* The Dark Knight (Limited Edition) (Warner) - I'm not a big fan of limited edition versions of DVDs anymore. Usually it's just some cheap junk I'll never look at again. That said I'm always tempted to get the limited edition of a movie I really like, and I was tempted by this. Ultimately passed for the regular edition, previewed below.

* The Dark Knight (Warner) - This for me is the Big One. Favorite Movie Of The Year. Yeah. Liked it more than Doomsday. I saw Dark Knight 5 times in the theater, and despite not having seen the other major awards contenders such as Slumdog Millionaire, Benjamin Button, Milk, etc I feel confident this will end up on top of the heap for me. Benjamin Button's the only one I'm sort of thinking even has a shot at beating Bats. But, Batman Begins was my favorite movie the year that came out, Prestige was #2 the year it came out, Memento was pretty damned close to the top the year it came out. I'm just a huge Christopher Nolan fan, though I still can't love Insomnia after seeing the superior original. The Dark Knight met my high expectations and surpassed them. I just didn't believe it'd be *this* good.

* Dodgeball (Fox) - More entertaining than it had a right to be considering how much this is similar to the IMO superior Basketball. Vince Vaughn is kind of coasting in this movie, he needs to do a Made-style motormouth jackass again soon.

* Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! (Fox) - This Dr Suess adaptation looked curiously antiseptic in the trailers. Can't say I'm too interested.

* Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb - Every movie Kubrick made after Killer's Kiss is an honest to god classic, and still this movie makes it to the top ranks. Maybe the best satire ever filmed, if only because if you read a bit about the subject, so much of it is REAL. It comes off as ridiculous exaggeration but most of the facts are accurate! That's the biggest joke of all.

* Dumb & Dumber (Warner) - Jim Carrey's best and funniest movie. Don't really need this in blu ray but still recommended if you don't already own it.

* I Am Legend (Ultimate Collector's Edition) (Warner) - I thought this movie was okay when I saw it but now - eh. It's just unimaginative Akiva Goldsman-ish schlock.

* Jet Li's Fearless (Universal) - Which one is the one where he has a dog collar? Is it this one? It's a racist stereotype to say all asian people look like(not to mention inaccurate) but it's just plain truth to say all Jet Li-starring American movies look alike.

* Lost: The Complete Fourth Season (Buena Vista) - I'm sure it looks great but I don't need to revisit this series on blu ray. I don't find the show has much rewatch value at all.

* The Mask (New Line) - Is it Jim Carrey week? Is Yes Man coming out in theaters on Friday(actually, let me check -- nope, week after. Guess they want a little extra time? Who knows). Anyway this movie is fairly good, Carrey's first movie after breaking out in Ace Ventura. And it has the first appearance of Cameron Diaz, and she's never been as hot as she is here. She's insanely hot in this movie.

* Ray Charles: Live At Montreux 1997 (Eagle Rock) - Respect for Ray Charles, but eh music blu ray.

* The Strat Pack Live in Concert (Eagle Rock) - Multiple hours of over the hill rock guitarists playing solo. The only way this could be more boring is if it were bass players.

* Super Troopers (Fox) - Funny movie, but I still prefer Club Dread. Yes, I realize that preference may one day cost me the Presidency but dammit, I must take a stand on principle!

* Tori Amos: Live At Montreux 1991/1992 (Eagle Vision) - Actually a Tori Amos concert might be blu ray worthy, just because this is probably her best period musically, also it's when she was hot.

Blu Ray Releases for 12/02 Previewed Briefly by Blue

* Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) (Image) - Good old fashion Carpenter awesomeness. The blu ray seems to be an Amazon exclusive for the first couple of months.

* Austin Powers Collection: Shagadelic Edition, Loaded with Extra Mojo (New Line) - I enjoyed these movies when they were released but for some reason they grate upon me now. Maybe it's the "too popular for it's own good" syndrome.

* Bam Margera Presents: Where the #$&% is Santa? (Warner) - Bam Margera still has a career and Johnny Knoxville doesn't. Wow.

* Casablanca (Ultimate Collector's Edition) (Warner) - Supposedly the blu ray of this film looks spectacular, unfortunately I've seen this movie until my eyes bled, so I don't need to see it for ten more years or so.

* The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (DisneyFile Edition) (Walt Disney) - Disappointing sequel to lackluster first film. This was always the weakest of the book series though, relying upon the character of Caspian who is largely passive, except at the wrong times. The actor in this was pretty awful to boot. And the english kids did NOT age well.

* The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (Walt Disney) - See above.

* The Contract (2006) (First Look) - A movie with John Cusack and Morgan Freeman neither you nor I have ever heard of. Not good signs.

* Day of the Dead (2008) (First Look) - If this doesn't have a lenticular image of a vomiting zombie, it's not the real Day of the Dead 2008. Haven't seen it but every single bit sounds horrible.

* The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) (Fox) - One of my all time favorite movies, can't wait to see how this looks on blu ray.

* Home Alone (Fox) - I liked this a lot as a kid but looking back I just see how insanely rich Culkin's family in this was, and how obnoxious they were to have such a large and overbearing number of kids.

* Jingle All the Way (Fox) - Arnold in a comedy never worked. Sorry Twins.

* La Femme Nikita (Sony) - Luc Besson classic, bit low budget for a really good blu ray(but then again so is Assault on Precinct 13, probably).

* The Longshots (Weinstein) - Sports comedies. Yuck.

* The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (Sony) - More Luc Besson. I walked out of this movie in the theater because it was just unbearably obnoxious in every possible way. This is where Besson jumped the shark.

* The Shawshank Redemption (Warner) - A classic, even though it does lift large pieces off of Escape From Alcatraz with Clint Eastwood.

* Step Brothers (Sony) - This looked funny, heard it was awful. Cable.

* Stranger Than Fiction (Special Edition) (Sony) - Loved this movie. This is a double dip on blu ray though.

* Three Days Grace: Live at the Palace (Sony Music) - Fuck music blu rays.

* Wanted (Universal) - Surprisingly I really enjoyed Wanted. I can't say it's a defensible opinion but oh well, I just enjoyed every silly violent moment of it.

* Wanted (Collector's Edition) (Universal) - See above.

* X-Files: Fight the Future (Fox) - Unfortunately these X-Files movies are likely to be the only X-Files releases on blu ray, because while it was shot on film from the beginning, the early seasons were all cut on video tape. What this means is there's no actual film negatives that are cut together and ready to go for an HD transfer. They'd have to entirely recut something like 5 seasons to make them hd-ready. Anyway this film was okay, though considering it was mildly disappointing at the time of release I don't imagine it's aged well.

* X-Files: I Want to Believe (Fox) - I soooo wanted to see this but it did not get a single good review that I've read anywhere, whether from a critic or a fan. Sigh. I DID want to believe X-Files could come back, but it was not to be.

Blu Ray Releases for 11/11 Previewed Briefly By Blue

* 3: The Dale Earnhardt Story (ESPN) - Christ, NASCAR. I realize NASCAR racing isn't just driving around in a circle for 5 hours(oh wait, actually it is) that it requires intense focus and concentration(sort of like the SATs) but who cares. It's boring either way. All you really need is to see the end anyway, unless there's a crash. But oh well. Anyway if you're into NASCAR you probably already saw this movie, so fuck you.

* Band of Brothers (HBO) - The most overrated Non-Sopranos show ever broadcast on HBO. See what I did there? I said it was overrated which is a stealth way of criticizing without actually making a real criticism of the show. Because being overrated is considered a fairly bad thing, but it's not the show's fault, it's the reaction of others to it. I'm not sure I really have a point. Anyway, it's a good show. I'm not as into WW2 as everyone else who ever lived so it's not my favorite HBO series but I thought it was well made. Looking forward to the Pacific theater sequel.

* Black Christmas (1974) (Koch Distributing) - Oh yeah. This is the first slasher movie ever! Inspired Halloween, Friday the 13th, etc! Except for any Giallo movie ever. Which was a genre introduced in Italy in the mid-60s. But hey! This one's in English, so it's the grandfather of the genre! Snark aside this is a good movie, and important.

* Chuck: The Complete First Season (Warner) - Every episode of this show that I've seen is exactly the same. Chuck and the hot agent chick infiltrate some swanky party, Chuck spots a spy, the hot agent chick intercepts the spy, but then it turns out the REAL spy is another hot chick that seduces Chuck, and hot agent chick has to save him from getting laid. Interspersed with obvious Best Buy humor stolen from The Forty Year Old Virgin.

* Dragon Ball Z - Return of the Cooler/Cooler's Revenge (FUNimation)- Never understood the appeal of this show, to me it's always seemed like a cross between Pokemon and Fist of the North Star, without the gore of the latter.

* Firefly (Fox) - Ah we were talking about 'overrated' as a critical remark and here we get served up Firefly, the most overrated tv series by Joss Whedon(and that's saying something). Firefly an entertaining show and well made, but imo the Western elements are far too surface level, and takes me out of it.

* Harry Potter Years 1-5 (Giftset) (Warner) - All previously released, this is a holidays-timed dvd package.

* Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Universal) - I enjoyed this movie a bit more than the original, which I liked. Really though neither of them get even a hint of the tone of the comics. The comics are minor classics, the movies are just a few steps above a Ninja Turtles movie.

* Hellboy II: The Golden Army (3-Disc Collector's Edition) (Universal) - Read above.

* JFK (Warner) - The one movie I'm certain to get of this list, this movie is actually UNDERRATED as far as I'm concerned. It's a modern classic, and who cares if it's true because it is just too good.

* Katt Williams: It's Pimpin' Pimpin' (Vivendi Visual) - Stand up comedy doesn't need to be in high def.

* Live From Abbey Road: Best Of Season One (BCI) - TV show I never heard of, apparantly. Beatles-related?

* The Police: Certifiable - Live in Buenos Aires (Universal Music Group) - Sting sucks outside of Dune and Baron Munchausen, and the Police have one decent song that I don't even remember the title.

* Soundstage: Sheryl Crow - Live (Koch Distributing) - Sheryl Crow was hot in a MILFy way 15 years ago. Now she's just old.

* Soundstage: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (Koch) - Good band but pass.

* Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Warner) - Apparantly this is awful, I wish FNORD would post more episodes of the tv series on the blog though.

* The Story of 'O' (Koch Distributing) - 70s soft core euro porn.

* Sukiyaki Western: Django (First Look) - Takashi Miike does a Western with Japanese actors. Miike's been off his game the past couple of years so I'll wait for reviews.

* Supernatural: The Complete Third Season (Warner) - Who watches this series? Is it any good?

* Tenacious D: The Complete Masterworks 2 (Sony Music) - Kyle Gass is not funny. He's a drag on Jack Black, who is funny sometimes but not consistently.

* This Christmas (Sony) - Holdover from last week, check that post out for more info(haha there's no actual info in the other post, fuck this movie)

Magic Japanese shrimp.

Blu Ray Releases for 11/04 Previewed Briefly by Blue

A Christmas Story (Ultimate Collector's Edition) (Warner) - An endearing, enduring classic and just plain entertaining. If this were packed with its sequel, which though inferior is still fun, I'd definitely pick it up. As it is, I'd wait for it to go down in price.

The Colt (Echo Bridge) - Echo Bridge has never released a good movie to my knowledge, so even though I've never heard of this I would rest easy in the assumption it sucks hard.

Futurama: Bender's Game (Fox) - Woo! Futurama finally on blu ray. Animation generally looks amazing in HD, especially computer based animation such as this. I bought the other two movies on dvd and I'll probably get this one(even though it's already been stolen and posted on the blog by thievely FNORD, below) but I'm unsure of which format.

Get Smart (2008) (Warner) - Never saw it, waiting for cable.

Gunnin' for That #1 Spot (Music Distribution) -
Fuck music blu rays.

Henry Poole is Here (Anchor Bay) - Not interested.

IMAX: Extreme (National Geographic) -
Not interested in imax unless it has Batman punching people.

Monster's Ball (Lionsgate) -
Halle Berry sex scenes in hd! Woo! Unfortunately they're wrapped up in a fairly obvious, ill conceived movie about racism.

NBA Champions 2007-2008 (Warner) - Basketball is the most boring sport in history. Except curling.

O.A.R.: Live from Madison Square Garden (Summit) -
Fuck music blu rays, Fuck O.A.R.

Planet of the Apes (1968) (Fox) -
Woo! One definite buy here, I love Heston kicking ape ass.

Planet of the Apes: 40-Year Evolution Blu-ray Collection (Fox) - Tempting set but pricey, and frankly the other movies in the series do not benefit from greater image clarity.

This Christmas (Sony) - Pass

Transsiberian (First Look) - From the director of the Machinist and Session 9, definite must-rent. Has Woody Harrelson, which is actually a good sign sometimes. Good taste in scripts.

Universal Soldier (Lionsgate) - Van Damme started out as a waiter, and this movie makes an argument for that career choice.

Vexille (FUNimation) -
Anime's not my thing.

Warren Miller's Playground (Shout Factory) - Music blu ray, you know what I say to those.

* Baraka (MPI) - Crap.

* Beat the Devil (Blu-ray Only) - Crap.

* Between The Lines: Sara Bareilles Live At The Filmore (Sony Music) - Chick's hot. But music blu ray = crap.

* The Bird People of China (Artsmagic) - Miike crap.

* Blackalicious: 4/20 Live in Seattle (MVD Group) - Fucking crap.

* Cannibal Taboo (MVD Group) - Crap. (probably)

* Cruel World (Echo Bridge) - Crap. Haven't seen it, but it has Edward Furlong.

* Dead Space: Downfall (Anchor Bay) - Probably crap.

* Elf (New Line) - Don't care. Crap.

* Essential Holiday Collection (Warner) - Yawn. Crap.

* The Final Countdown (Blue Underground) - Cool but waiting on Blue Underground's Argento discs.

* The Final Patient (Echo Bridge) - It's Echo Bridge. Easy call. Crap.

* Hell Ride (Weinstein) - Tarantino acts in this I think. Therefore crap.

* Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter (MVD Group) - The title is the best part. Crap.

* Journey to the Center of the Earth (Limited Edition) (2008) (New Line Cinema) - Wretched Crap.

* Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (New Line) - Crap.

* Last Time I Saw Paris (Blu-ray Only) - Crap.

* Mysterious Island (Echo Bridge) - More Echo Bridge. Crap.

* The Polar Express Presented in 3-D (Warner) - Holiday zombies by Zemeckis. Crap.

* The Prince & Me 3: A Royal Honeymoon (First Look) - Vomit.

* The Prince & Me 2: Royal Wedding (First Look) - Vomit.

* Saving God (Echo Bridge) - Go die Echo Bridge.

* Tinker Bell (Walt Disney) - Walt Disney would probably be rolling in his grave if he himself had not been a greedy evil bastard.

Two really smart guys.

Blu Ray Releases for 10/20 Previewed Briefly by Blue

* The Breed (First Look) - The Birds with wild genetically enhanced dogs. Starring Michelle Rodriguez. Winner. Not.

* Casino Royale (2006, Collector's Edition) (Sony) - Double dip, dunno the difference, it's just a cash-in with the new movie though.

* Diary of the Dead (Weinstein) - 15 minutes of genuine creepiness towards the end doesn't imo excuse the other 80 minutes or so of bad acting and lame dialogue. If this had been made by a 25 year old as their first movie I'd give it a pass, but it's George GD Romero! Give me a break. Not his worst movie but far from his best.

* Die Another Day (MGM) - A lot of people hate this Bond film, and it is by far the most over the top of the Pierce Brosnan Bonds, but I still find a lot to like about it. Don't need it on blu ray though.

* Dr. No (MGM) - Connery pretty much sells this flick, it's somewhat goofy, but he grounds it and makes it believable. Plus Ursula Andress is hot, and it's nice to see Bond be such a bastard, before he got demasculated.

* Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed (Vivendi Visual) - Title is intentionally ironic I guess, because it's basically using Michael Moore's discredited propaganda techniques to try and convince people that Intelligent Design is a science and not bullshit. Of course, the only people dumb enough to fall for it already believe in it, so...

* For Your Eyes Only (MGM) - One of the better and more serious Roger Moore Bond movies, it's a fun flick.

* From Dusk 'Til Dawn (Walt Disney) - This is not actually coming out in the US, the release list I always steal from never got updated after it was initially listed.

* From Russia with Love (MGM) - My all-time favorite Bond film. Before the plots went over the top, but after the clumsiness of the initial attempt with Dr No, this is pure cinematic bliss. Top it off with imo the hottest Bond girl of all time, Daniela Bianchi.

* Halloween (2007) (Weinstein) - I sort of feel an obligation to despise this movie, but I found it so funny while watching it in the theater that I just can't. Rob Zombie is a functioning retard behind the camera, but it's an honest to god R-rated horror film so I give it a pass. Plus it's just so stupid!

* Holiday Favorites with the Wonderland Carolers (Cinevolve) - Wuh?

* The Incredible Hulk (2008) (Universal) - Okay, got this confused with the original when the original hit blu ray last month, this is the one I prefer. Norton does a really good job as Banner and the movie is exciting imo.

* James Bond Collection Three-Pack: Volume 1 (Die Another Day, For Your Eyes Only, Thunderball) (MGM) - Just a bundle of the individually released discs.

* James Bond Collection Three-Pack: Volume 2 (Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Live and Let Die) (MGM) - Just a bundle of the individually released discs.

* Live and Let Die (MGM) - Moore's first Bond and it's silly as balls. Lamest villain death alert.

* The Strangers (2008) (Universal) - A lot of people are saying this was the best horror film of the year, but I'm skeptical. It DID have an awesome trailer, but it's such a tired premise. At least it wasn't shot entirely from the perspective of a character with a video camera. Small mercies.

* Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (DreamWorks) - Burton and Depp's latest collaboration is excellent, though I tend to be more forgiving of Burton than most. I only really dislike his Planet of the Apes.

* Thunderball (MGM) - People talk about Goldfinger being the touchstone of the Bond franchise, but if you look into it, this film really is. It refines the template from Goldfinger that most Bond films to follow, and is actually the most successful Bond picture, in terms of adjusted gross/ticket sales. In todays dollars Thunderball would be bigger than The Dark Knight. That said, it's really the most rote of the initial run of Connery films.

* The Woods Have Eyes (Echo Bridge) - Generic rip-offy title and no recognizable actors, no plot listed at amazon, and it's by Echo Bridge. All this fails to spell cinematic classic.

Blu Ray Releases for 10/14 Previewed Briefly by Blue

* American Gangster (Universal) - This movie sounds great on paper and it's well made and well acted, but in the final analysis it falls short of being truly great. It expends a lot of effort to be a classic crime drama but ends up struggling to be average.

* Casino (Universal) - Worthwhile but inferior followup to Goodfellas.

* The Code (First Look) - Okay this is on the list of releases but I can't find any evidence this movie actually exists.

* Constantine (Warner) - The comic was about a blonde British magician/con man who outwits the devil for his soul. The movie was about a dark haired American freelance exorcist who lives above a bowling alley and had a gold crucifix shotgun he uses to kill cgi demons. Yeah, guess which was better. Still it's kind of entertaining.

* Eastern Promises (Universal) - Cronenberg's not-weird period continues. It turns out Cronenberg is a lot better than most at doing crime drama, as this is fairly original for the genre, as was A History of Violence.

* Gangster Giftset (American Gangster, Casino, Eastern Promises) (Universal) - See individual reviews.

* IMAX: Coral Reef Adventure (Image) - Yawn.

* IMAX: Cosmic Voyage/Destiny In Space (Warner) - Yawn.

* IMAX: Dolphins (Image) - Yawn.

* IMAX: Space Station/Mission to Mir (Warner) - Yawn.

* IMAX: The Living Sea (Image) - Wow this is an interesting disc. Just kidding. Yawn.

* Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Paramount Entetainment) - Nuh? Buh? An actual NEW movie release this week? Wow. I liked this, but I can't deny that it's weak sauce as far as the Indy series goes.

* The Jewel of the Nile (Fox) - Remember when Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner were sex symbols? When I was like 5? Yeah. Generally fun movies but wow, so 80s.

* Mongol (Universal) - An incredibly frustrating experience at the theater. Basically this is Genghis Khan: The Early Years. And apparantly all Genghis Khan did as a kid and young man was constantly run away from his enemies, betray his friends, and walk around the desert. Seriously, this movie sucked. We see his humiliations in great detail, basically he loses every fight for 99% of the film, then at the end there's a huge battle that's mostly off screen, that he wins. This battle is won by an army they gloss over him recruiting, btw. The whole production is a waste. Pass pass pass.

* Poltergeist (Warner) - Tobe Hooper's big try at getting into the A List was actually a huge success, but it didn't do him any good, as there have been constant rumors of producer Spielberg being the actual director. Which is probably not that far off the mark. Anyway I don't really care for this movie, it's better than stuff like The Amityville Horror, but it's still in the "ooh scary fart cloud ghosts!".

* The Rocker (Fox) - This actually was well reviewed. Sank like a rock, though. Sounds like a wait-for-cable sitch.

* Romancing the Stone (Fox) - See Jewel of the Nile preview,

* Standard Operating Procedure (Sony) - Errol Morris is one of the best documentarians around, but I'm not really big on his interview style, it feels off to me.

* The Ultimate Matrix Collection (Warner) - Honesty time: none of these movies hold up outside of the action scenes.

* The Universe: Season One (A&E) - Yawn.

* War, Inc. (First Look) - What happened to John Cusack being awesome? Come on man, you can do it again. This is surely not it.

* War: Greatest Hits - Live (Warner Music Group) - Yay, boring music blu ray of the week. What's it good for? Absolutely nothing.

Blu Ray Releases for 10/07 Previewed Briefly by Blue

* The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (Sony) - Ooh Harryhausen on blu ray. It'll be interesting to see how his stop motion footage holds up in the higher resolution, as there was already an easily discernible difference in quality in the dvds. I kind of love this movie, not for any rational reason, and not even for the creature fx, I just love the whole style of the production and the sfx of the heroine shrunken down by the evil wizard. Not the best Harryhausen film(Jason and the Argonauts or Clash of the Titans is that) but a personal pleasure.

* The Amityville Horror (1979) (MGM) - Alleged classic, that launched a thousand weak haunted house ripoffs. Ghosts. Just. Aren't. Intimidating. Seriously. They're little spazzy clouds. Get over it.

* Beetlejuice (Warner) - Now, they may not be physically intimidating, but they can really be funny, as this classic proves. Tim Burton gets a lot of flack these days but imo he had an amazing run for his first ten years or so. This is his second film, and it still feels fresh and original today.

* Body Heat (Warner) - I don't like Kathleen Turner. Just don't. Don't find her especially attractive, either. She comes off sort of drag-queeny to me.

* Carrie (1976) (MGM) - A classic, and the movie that launched both Brian DePalma and Stephen King to fame. Both have suffered artistically since(after creative peaks following this film) but this stands the test of time. Fun fact, Sissy Spacek had been cast as Princess Leia in Star Wars, and Carrie Fisher as Carrie in this, but Lucas and DePalma, who were friends, were sharing their audition space and decided to swap lead actresses. I don't think anyone's ever complained. I can see Carrie Fisher playing Carrie, but not Sissy Spacek as Princess Leia.

* Faces of Death (Gorgon) - A collection of gruesome real life news video and out-right shams. None of this was ever even DVD quality footage so don't waste your money.

* The Happening (Fox) - Hahahahahahahahhahaha. Hahahahahahahahaha. Hahahahaha.

* Korn: Live on the Other Side (Image) - Korn, a nerd band pretending to be hardcore, for fans of the same type.

* The Omen (1976) (Fox) - Eh, I hated the remake but this original isn't really much better imo. Kind of junky even back then.

* The Omen: The Collection (Fox) - Despite what I said about the first film above I really do hold a place in my heart for the sequels. Guilty pleasures for sure.

* Otis: Uncut (Warner) - I should ask Blulighter about this film because although I've seen the title mentioned for seemingly ever on horror movie websites I never bothered to actually look into whether it was any good. In any case it's new horror so buyer beware.

* Ray Harryhausen Collection (20 Million Miles to Earth, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, It Came From Beneath the Sea, 7th Voyage of Sinbad) (Sony) - If you like Harryhausen these are all must-buys, though to tell the truth I find most of them slightly boring. They're good once every five years on a rainy saturday afternoon.

* Rest Stop (Warner) - New horror. Dunno what this is, the cover art for the dvd at Walmart(horror found easily at Walmart is usually a bad sign first off) reminds me of Wrong Turn, which I sort of liked. Although really it was kind of inexplicable that I liked that, so this probably stinks. Sound logic, I say.

* Rest Stop: Don't Look Back (Warner) - A sequel for a movie I never bothered to see. Sounds like a winner.

* Sleeping Beauty (Walt Disney) - Supposedly this looks amazing on blu ray but I'm not a big Disney fan so pass. Probably guaranteed enjoyment to anyone else though.

* Stuck (Image) - Stuart Gordon is always worth a shot. Rental though.

* The Visitor (2008) (Starz) - One of the best reviewed films of the year, but it didn't look like anything that needs to be seen in blu ray quality.

* You Don't Mess with The Zohan (Sony) - Adam Sandler. Yawn.

* Young Frankenstein (Fox) - Outright classic, but suffers from poor rewatchability for me. I much prefer The Producers and Blazing Saddles.
